Civil War

(1861-1865)

On December 20, 1860, the Palmetto State was the first to secede from the Union. Beginning with the Ordinance of Secession, the exhibition focuses on the weapons of the war and the Union blockade that centered on Charleston, one of the key ports for Southern imports and exports.

Morse gun set
Among the several weapons exhibited is the Morse Carbine, one of the few weapons produced in Greenville, S.C. A reproduction of the Confederate Submarine Hunley, created in 1960, also highlights the area, even though scholars now know that it is inaccurate in many details. The original, discovered off Charleston harbor in 1995, reveals new evidence that is incorporated in panels next to the replica.
