Pirate Night at the State Museum

Friday, May 7, 2010
6 - 10 p.m.

Arrrgh! Pirates, those dastardly buccaneers of the high seas, have taken the South Carolina State Museum hostage for the night and are up to no good! Who will walk the plank? Is there treasure hidden away? Bring your flashlight and find out Friday evening, August 7 from 6 – 10 p.m. as the museum presents Pirate Night at the State Museum!
Plan to spend an enjoyable spring evening with a great movie, snacks, and the chance to see the museum after hours. And for those movie-goers looking for something just a little different, there will be a later showing at 9 p.m. with some special surprises!

The special Pirate Night movie is the modern classic, The Princess Bride, a comic adventure tale about pirates, revenge, sword-fighting, cowardly villains, giants, miracles, and, of course, true love. The cast features Cary Elwes as the Dread Pirate Roberts, Mandy Patinkin as Inigo Montoya (“…you killed my father. Prepare to die.”), Andre the Giant as Fezzig, Billy Crystal as Miracle Max, Robin Wright as Buttercup, and Peter Falk and Fred Savage as the Grandfather and Grandson.

Registration begins at 6 p.m. followed by a screening of The Princess Bride at 6:30 p.m. Guests will receive a bag of popcorn (drinks and other snacks will be available for purchase). After the movie, get out your flashlights (bring yours or buy ours!) and tour the darkened museum galleries, including the new blockbuster exhibit Pirates, Privateers and Buccaneers.

Guests who would prefer to come to the later showing will arrive at 7:30 p.m. to tour the museum galleries and the new blockbuster Pirates exhibit then attend a special audience participation screening of The Princess Bride at 9 p.m.  On hand for this showing will be costumed characters bringing the characters of Buttercup, Westley/Dread Pirate Roberts, Inigo, etc. to life. In the spirit of “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” audience members will be encouraged to shout out their own favorite lines from the beloved movie.
